Many, many years ago, in Roman times, the village of Alcabideque was experiencing a year of great drought. One fine day, a woman was grazing her flock when she saw a bird emerging from a hole, its beak and feet wet. Recovering from her astonishment, she ran to the village to call her neighbors to see this phenomenon. They all began to dig and found a spring. There was a party all night long because the drought had ended. The Romans, some years later, covered the spring with a tower (Castellem de Alcabideque) and channeled the water to the city of Conímbriga. From that day on, it became a region abundant in water, and Alcabideque became synonymous with "springs of water" and "water of God".
